Fierce protests as eight-year-old rape victim dies in Bangladesh

On Thursday, a Bangladeshi girl who was raped at the age of eight died from her injuries, causing ferocious protests all over the nation.

According to a case filed by her mother, the girl was raped while she was staying at her older sister's home in the city of Magura when she went to bed.

The elder sister's 18-year-old husband, his parents, and brother were detained and placed on remand.


An angry mob allegedly poured gasoline on the home where the incident took place on Thursday night after hearing the news of the child's death.

The government's Inter-Services Public Relations( ISPR) department announced a statement on Thursday that the girl passed away after suffering three cardiac arrests at around 13:00 local time( 07:00 GMT).

The heart failed to re-enter after the third episode, despite the doctors 'efforts to stabilize the condition twice.

After being admitted on March 8, she spent six days in critical condition at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.

Following the girl's death, her mother told local media, "I thought my daughter would survive." I would never have let her go anywhere alone again if she had survived.

In a military helicopter that landed at the neighborhood stadium around 18:00, the girl's body was transported back to Magura, where fierce protests broke out.

According to The Daily Star, Aiyub Ali, the officer in charge of Magura Sadar Police Station, claimed that the authorities had worked hard to control the situation.

Before the girl's namaz-e-janaza, the Islamic funeral prayer was observed in the Magura public square at 19:30, thousands of people gathered there to pay her homage.
