Pro-Palestine demonstrators in Liverpool say the UK government’s recognition of Palestine is the bare minimum and are demanding further action from Keir Starmer’s government.

The UK’s recent recognition of Palestine was “almost meaningless”, one protester told Al Jazeera at a rally before the Labour Party’s annual conference.

“You know, nice gesture, but it should have happened 30 years ago,” he said. “I don’t think that’s going to have much effect or impact on the ground.”

He said much greater pressure needed to be applied to Israel.

“Israel has learned that it can get away literally with murder.”

Another protester said she saw the UK’s recognition of Palestine as an attempt to whitewash its complicity in Gaza.

“The latest charade of recognising the state of Palestine is simply a strategic move to try to rinse their blood-drenched hands,” she said.
