Hundreds of meteorologists in the country have been added to the list of federal workers laid off by US President Donald Trump. Trump has announced the layoff of about 800 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) employees, the country's main climate research agency.CNN News reported this information in a report.
According to the report, on Thursday (February 27) afternoon local time, the US Department of Commerce emailed NOAA employees to inform them that their jobs would be cut by the end of the day. Other government agencies have also experienced mass layoffs in recent days.
The layoffs come after Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief Elon Musk continued efforts to cut costs through funding cuts and layoffs.
California's Democratic Congressman Jared Huffman has expressed anger at the climate research agency's layoffs. He said U.S. citizens depend on NOAA for free, accurate forecasts, weather warnings, and emergency information. This has been proven during extreme weather events. Musk's shameful mission is stalling important programs.
