The island nation's government announced a Friday holiday for government offices and schools to reduce traffic. As a result, many streets in and around the capital Colombo are deserted. Meanwhile, thousands of vehicles were seen standing in long lines for fuel.

The state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation did not receive a tender for the new fuel stockpile because the country's power and energy minister, Kanchna Wijesekera, said on Thursday.

Earlier, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that in the next six months, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would need about ৬ 8 billion in aid from China and India.
